The Bears did not disappoint their fans on home turf, beating the Aragon Dons 35-7 on Friday night to make their record 4-1 this season.
The Bears started with the ball, and quickly added points on the board from a 21-yard rush by senior quarterback Xander Eschelman diving for the pylon. With 9:56 remaining in the first quarter, junior kicker Anthony Perez’s extra point started the Bears off with a 7-0 lead.
The Bears received the ball back after forcing a punt. With 6:42 left in the first quarter, junior running back Evaimalo Ama had an impressive run, breaking tackles, sprinting down the sideline, and finding the endzone for a 64-yard rushing touchdown, increasing the Bears’ lead 14-0.
Another three and out from the Dons gave the Bears great field position. The Bears drove down the field, capped with a 21-yard pass from Eschelman to junior running back Monty Turner for their third touchdown. By the end of the first quarter the Bears were up 21-0.
With an exchange of punts from both teams, the Bears were in striking distance again. Senior running back Torin Baker rushed into the endzone for his first touchdown of the season, extending the Bears’ lead 28-0 with 6:58 left in the second quarter. The extra point by senior kicker Gabriel Hermosillo bounced off the right goal post and sailed through the uprights.
The Bears’ defense continued to stunt any offensive attempts made by Aragon. Junior cornerback Amir Bonner got the Bears their first interception with 2:48 left on the clock.
With 10 seconds left in the half, Ama rushed for a 27-yard touchdown, scoring his second touchdown of the game. The Bears entered halftime up 35-0.
The second half went by quickly due to a running clock. The score remained 35-0 for the Bears through the end of the third quarter.
The Dons managed to put together a solid drive and prevented a shutout with a 4-yard rushing touchdown in the last 3:00 of the game.
The Bears ran the clock down to seal the game, winning 35-7. M-A dominated yet another game with five touchdowns.
“This team is a brotherhood. We all support each other in every single way,” Turner said.
“We need to improve on the mistakes we made, especially since we had a lot of flags,” Bonner said. “Playing better teams will be more challenging.”
The Bears now enter a bye week. “Two weeks of work for one game is double than usual, so we’re going to be ready,” Eschelman said.
The Bears will take the home turf again on October 11 against the Los Gatos Wildcats at 7:00 p.m.
