Monterra Credit Union held a financial literacy workshop at Redwood City Library’s teen center on Wednesday. This recurring event teaches students from elementary through high school the fundamentals of budgeting, saving, and even strategic retirement planning.
Financial Education Specialist Angel Ramirez led the presentation, teaching students about essential savings and investment strategies. He covered topics like the 50/30/20 rule and Roth IRAs, providing students with the tools to start planning their financial futures.
Redwood City Library employee Sonia Delgado explained how beneficial financial programs are for teens. “My first financial program was when I was a teen at San Carlos Library,” Delgado said. “It really helped me navigate my future.”
Participants were instructed to download Zogo, a financial literacy app, where they can earn points to redeem Apple and Amazon gift cards paid for by Monterra Credit.
“It’s like Duolingo,” Ramirez said. “You get points for learning financial literacy.”
At the end of the presentation, students were given their own green ‘piggy bank’ to store spare change.
Monterra Credit aims to help the community thrive and invest in youth financial literacy. Whether it be through fresh-popped popcorn or Apple gift cards, they hope to attract even more teens at their next event.
“I’ve seen some people come up years later to say thank you,” Ramirez said. “It’s really nice what we’re able to do for this community.”
