Major Renovations Are Coming to M-A

Significant renovations are coming to M-A in the next few years, including a new classroom building, updated sports facilities, improvements to the B-Wing, and other minor projects. All these projects will be bond-funded.

The combined projects are estimated to cost $97 million, with $56.6 million allocated to the new N-Wing building, $14 million to sports projects, $5 million to B-Wing modernization, and $21.9 million to minor infrastructure projects. However, these costs are subject to change.

“We can’t be exact on the budget. It’s very contingent,” Sequoia Union High School District Chief Facilities Officer Narayan Naidu said.

The N-Wing building will replace portions of the D- and E-Wings near the Green. The design includes around 20 rooms in three stories, including a space for a new ceramics classroom and a student support center. “The building will accommodate all the activities that are going on currently,” Naidu said.

Due to the construction, many classes in the D- and E-Wings will have to be temporarily relocated. During the construction process, the school plans to use portables as temporary classroom spaces.

Plans for B-Wing modernization aim to provide additional student support and counseling spaces. The renovation plans include a new breezeway for students to study, eat, and socialize.

“We are always low on office space and aren’t able to bring in the resources that we would like because we don’t have the space,” counselor Teshionda Nickerson said. “The renovations in the B-Wing will allow us to serve more students and support more programs.”

Many athletic facilities are also getting renovations starting as early as next year. These updates include a new press box and bleachers on the home side of the football field. A new weight room and P.E. classroom is also being considered, as well as improvements to the existing weight and locker room. “I’m seeking proposals from architects regarding the new weight room and the modernization of the P.E. buildings,” Naidu said.

Smaller projects may include window replacements, roof resurfacing, exterior painting, LEDs, and renovated restrooms. Next year, the District plans to start replacing single-pane windows with new, double-pane windows in the D-, C-, and E-Wings, helping retain room temperature. Roofing projects are also planned, with the goal of replacing gravel roofing with steel.

Subdrainage around campus is another necessary change because the city does not have a proper drainage system. “We have many water issues, especially with stormwater. The project is on the way at the moment.” Naidu said.

While construction could start as early as next year, a specific timeline remains uncertain. “It all depends on how long it takes for approval by DSA [Division of the State Architect],” Naidu said. “It’s very unpredictable at the moment, and the schedule is very contingent on DSA approval.”

Despite the challenges, those involved with the project are enthusiastic. “I am so excited for the construction project at M-A. The updates to the stadium and classrooms are long overdue,” Superintendent Crystal Leach said.

“The projects will boost morale, provide new facilities, and be conducive for effective learning,” Naidu said.
