Palo Alto Parades into Spring with Cheer

The 101st annual May Fete Parade and Fair was celebrated on Saturday, where the community gathered to march down University Ave. to Heritage Park to celebrate growth and nurture relationships within Palo Alto.

The event featured an uplifting parade of 57 diverse groups, promoting children’s health and education, local elementary schools, and support for animals in need. Marching bands from various elementary and middle schools, including Fletcher Elementary School and Greene Middle School, followed the groups, creating a festive atmosphere.

The march kicked off with The Women’s Club of Palo Alto and an upbeat dance number, followed by homemade floats and lively mascots. The parade also offered the chance for local students to showcase their projects and passions, like Castilleja’s robotics team.

Following the colorful floats, local Girl Scout and Cub Scout troops marched with pride, showing off sashes lined with badges displaying years of experience. Just behind them, members of the U.S. Air Force and Navy made a powerful entrance, holding their flags high.

Close behind, the J.L. Stanford Middle School band filled the air with lively tunes, keeping spirits high along the parade route. For community member Lin Nay, the May Fete Parade is an annual tradition for his family. “I think the bands are the best part,” he said. “Music changes the whole feeling of the parade.”

The event also gave parents and community members a chance to spotlight youth education programs. From language schools to tutoring centers, families proudly showcased their learning journeys through decorated floats, matching T-shirts, and eye-catching displays. “It’s a fun event for everyone, and kids love getting to be a part of the parade,” Nay said.

The celebration continued at Heritage Park, where booths were set up with information about local organizations, engaging games, and fun prizes for kids. The atmosphere was lively and welcoming, encouraging families to explore programs, connect with neighbors, and enjoy the sunny afternoon together. Community member Rhianne Liu recalled her past experiences with the fair. “Last year, it was raining the whole time and not a lot of people showed up,” she said. “It’s refreshing to see so many community members here this year.”

Paly’s pep band and cheer team kept the energy high with a set of songs, including Chappell Roan’s “HOT TO GO!” adding to the festive mood. Families gathered around food trucks serving a variety of treats, like tacos and popsicles, while live music filled the park, providing an optimistic ending to the parade centered on community pride and connection.
