Located in downtown Palo Alto, Macarena offers a vibrant entry to Spanish cuisine. With ambient lighting that sets the mood for a relaxed and laid-back dining experience, the atmosphere is elevated with even better food. Although some dishes fail to satisfy expectations, there is no doubt that Macarena lives up to its traditional and cultural front.
Croquetas de Jamón ($10): 7/10

The Croquetas de Jamón appetizer is irresistible. The crispy, fried exterior pairs nicely with a creamy cheese and ham stuffing, creating a perfect blend. While they are delicious, the rich but heavy filling can become too overwhelming within a few bites.
Salmon En Papillote ($28): 9/10

If you’re looking for a light yet filling option, the Salmon En Papillote is an excellent choice. The delicious main course is surrounded by a light yellow curry with a hint of coconut and assorted vegetables. The salmon itself is lightly seasoned, but when paired with the sauce on top, creates a delectable combination of Spanish flavor.
Grilled Calamari ($18): 5/10

While Macarena’s calamari adds variety to the appetizer menu, the calamari is too bland. Served with a subtle Salsa Mary sauce, the flavors of the fish and the sauce mixed together overpowered each other, ultimately creating an unbalanced dish. The sauce smothers the flavor of the seasoning, cementing this appetizer as subpar.
Niña Colada ($8): 10/10

The refreshing tropical virgin piña colada is an excellent drink to pair with your meal. Topped with a dried slice of pineapple, this sweet mocktail really introduces the Spanish vibe of the restaurant. The sweet combo of coconut and pineapple flavors truly pops, and the thick, creamy texture makes it especially satisfying.
Chocolate Sacher Cake ($10): 9/10

The Chocolate Sacher Cake topped with apricot jam offers a closer look into traditional Spanish cuisine. The dessert’s chocolate flavor is not too sweet, allowing the fruit and jam to shine through. The size is perfect for two as it is not too heavy, but still satisfying.
