Bear Bites: Horsefeather Puts a Twist on California Classics

Horsefeather is a fresh addition to the Town and Country restaurant scene. Its sleek, modern vibe sets the scene for a menu with an elevated twist on California comfort food. Every dish arrived beautifully plated, and the flavors perfectly match its sophisticated presentation. Each dish feels carefully crafted, leaving one full and satisfied.

Duck Fat Fries ($7): 6/10

Having tried hundreds of fries from different restaurants, Horsefeather’s fries still appear elevated. The plate arrives hot, piled high with a mound of sizzling fries, topped with umami seasoning, and served with ketchup. Unfortunately, the taste doesn’t match their impressive appearance. Lightly salted and somewhat crunchy, they lean a little plain and could use a special sauce or more umami seasoning.

Chochinita Pibil Tacos ($17): 5/10

These tacos may catch the eye with their appealing colors and variety of toppings. The corn tortillas wrapped around braised pork, bright red onion, fresh cilantro, and two house-made salsas. Despite the impressive presentation, the pork lacks flavor, falling flat against expectations. The only thing helping this dish was the house-made salsa roja, which added some much-needed juice and spice to an otherwise bland dish.

Cream Sherry Braised Beef Roast ($36): 10/10

This beef roast is a must-try when visiting Horsefeather. This dish includes slow-roasted braised beef immersed in a rich sherry sauce, creamy mashed potatoes, and a spring mix salad. The mashed potatoes were buttery, smooth, and paired just right with the sherry sauce drizzled on top. The beef was cooked just right, and the sauce was rich but not too heavy. The spring mix salad was topped with Dijon vinaigrette, which created a refreshing bite after the beef and potatoes. Every aspect comes together to make this plate excellent.

Korean Crispy Wings ($20): 9/10

Crispy and flavorful, these Korean wings arrived lacquered in a sweet brown glaze and a sprinkle of sesame seeds on top for a subtle nutty hint. A side of ranch dressing balances the bold and tangy flavors, creating a taste that satisfies. These wings are perfectly crispy on the outside with a juicy, tender inside. These wings are unmistakably shareable, and I couldn’t help but wish the order came with more than just six wings to go around.
