Donut Club and Distance Learning

With so many time-honored traditions cancelled, modified, and postponed as students navigate distance learning, one club is going above and beyond to bring a little bit of normalcy right to your doorstep. Starting in late September, the Donut Club will be open for online orders to have donuts delivered. As the only food club still open for business, the club’s leadership has come up with unique new ways to continue serving students. 

 

The new process for ordering donuts is completely virtual. Rather than visiting C-1 during lunch, students can visit this google form to enter their information and select their choice, and a member of the club will drive to their house to deliver it. This year the cost per donut has risen to $1.25 as a result of supplier cost increasing. While there is concern about health and safety due to COVID-19, there are numerous precautions being taken to ensure that it remains safe to deliver donuts. The club buys their donuts in bulk from Chuck’s Donuts, a local chain whose safety policies include social distancing and a mask requirement. In terms of the donut club’s deliveries themselves, Calypso said “we are making sure that everything, including the boxes with the donuts are sanitized, and ultimately we are trying to reduce the transfer of germs”.

 

The reasoning behind remaining open came as a result of concern for the community. Calypso Boustiha, a junior who currently serves as the Treasurer of the Donut Club as well as the Junior Class Vice President, said “We want to keep the tradition alive and still bring a little joy to people especially with online learning”. Lyndsey Shahani, a junior and member of the club, also stated that “at first we were planning to disband the club for this year with everything going on, but we wanted to carry on the tradition. It took a little while to figure out the system, but we are excited to try it”. The Donut Club has been a staple of Monday lunches since its foundation eight years ago, as one of the longest standing clubs this year.
