On Monday afternoon, the baseball team defeated Sequoia Ravens by a score of 3-2 after giving up a late lead only to come back and swoop the win from the Ravens.
Both offenses struggled to score throughout the game. However, it was M-A who had the clear chance to score early. In the bottom of the second inning, the Bears had runners at the corners but a flyout ended the inning.
The Bears’ scoring came in the third inning. Sophomore shortstop Will Roberts started a two-out rally by earning a walk. Shortly after, he advanced to second base with a passed ball. Junior designated hitter Rowan Kelly also walked, and both runners advanced a base after another passed ball. The opportunity seemed to be over after junior Trevor Heinz appeared to ground out, however, the Sequoia infielder threw a high ball over the head of the first baseman who caught the ball away from home base allowing Roberts and Kelly to score, putting the Bears in the lead byitin the early innings.
Junior Harrison Long played phenomenally all game, pitching six innings, allowing zero runs, and tallying six strikeouts.Long’s dominant performance was crucial to the Bears’ win.
After the game he said, “I really just went out there and threw strikes.” Long also attributed his success to his teammates, saying, “I have the best defense in the league behind me, so it’s really easy to be confident up there and know that even when they hit the ball, the defense is going to get them out.”
The Bears hung on to their 2-0 lead into the top of the seventh inning, looking to close out the game. However, two home runs from the Ravens shockingly tied the game.
Senior Henry Bei spoke of the leadership in the dugout going into the bottom of the seventh inning, saying, “The leaders of our team stepped up and made sure that we competed at the plate.”
At the end of the seventh inning senior George Zaharias doubled for his second hit of the game. Junior Shawn Pagee got the game-winning hit with a grounder to the first baseman which was then overthrown by the defender and allowed Zaharias to score the game-winning run.
“Winning that game demonstrated that our resilience to adversity is great; we are all competitors and do the best we can to win,” added Bei after the game.
The Bears look to win their senior night matchup against the King’s Academy Knights this coming Saturday.
