Starbucks locations nationwide instituted a new code of conduct on Monday that brought significant changes to store policy. In September, CEO Brian Niccol outlined a plan that aimed to bring the chain “back to its roots” as a more traditional and cozy coffeehouse rather than a quick grab-n-go spot. As a favorite study location for many M-A students, here’s what you need to know about the new Starbucks policies.
Drinks for Here

One change Starbucks has implemented is an updated refill policy. Drinks ordered “for here” are now served in tall glasses or ceramic mugs instead of the chain’s usual plastic cups, making the experience both more eco-friendly and in line with a traditional coffeehouse ambiance. “For here” orders of plain brewed coffee or tea are also eligible for free refills, though beverages like refreshers and cold brews are not.
“Especially with the prices these days, the free refills are so nice,” senior Roxana Mejia said.
Customer-only Bathrooms

For the past seven years, Starbucks has maintained an open-door policy, allowing anyone to use its restrooms without requiring a purchase. The company has now reversed this policy by restricting bathroom access only to paying customers. This change was made to enhance customer experience by prioritizing paying customers and creating a more inviting atmosphere.
However, this policy has raised controversy for its inconvenience and anti-homeless nature. “I think it’s exclusive for them to limit their bathrooms to customers, and it does the opposite of creating a more inviting atmosphere,” junior Tessa Carneiro said. “People will not feel as ‘at home’ as Starbucks thinks they will.”
The Condiment Bar

When the COVID-19 pandemic struck, Starbucks removed its self-serve condiment bars as a health and safety precaution. Now, with the pandemic behind us, this coffee shop staple is making a comeback. Fully stocked with milk, creamer, and a variety of sweeteners, the condiment bar allows customers to once again customize drinks to their liking. However, the return of more fun and cozy ingredients, like cinnamon or nutmeg, is yet to be confirmed.
It’s so stupid policies
Two days ago I tried to go to the restroom and the guy he work there said ‘I have to buy something first. do I have to PEE on myself before I think about my drink ? It’s really ridiculous. I just left even without making any order .also I told all my family “don’t not buy or purchase anything from a Starbucks anymore until they change. They’re stupid policies.
Doesn’t bother me. Mess up some other bathroom nearby. You really didn’t need to go that bad it sounds like anyway.
Urban Starbucks locations have had a similar policy for years. I think I first encountered it in 1998 at the Starbucks on DuPont Circle in D.C.. Homeless people had been going into the bathroom and sleeping. The store installed a dial code lock on the bathroom doors.
Their ceramic mug policy shouldn’t have been changed in the early nineties. When you pay so much for a cup of coffee. Why would you want to drink it in a plastic cup? Coffee tastes better in ceramic.
I miss how Starbucks roasted their own coffee on site. That added to the coffeehouse charm. That’s also been missing since the nineties.
Starbucks is NAME you pay for.
Policies are ridiculous!
