Bear Bites: Hatched Launches Brunch Options in Palo Alto

Breakfast and egg-focused restaurant Hatched opened its doors in Town and Country on Jan. 5. Just two weeks later, during this review, they had to close four hours early due to high demand from excited customers. With mild but satisfying flavors, the food ranges from exceptionally tasty to simply bland.

Parmesan Garlic Tater Tots: 10/10 ($5)

Lilia Wilkiewicz / M-A Chronicle

This dish deserves an 11/10. Served hot and fresh, the garlic tater tots are an explosively flavorful and dangerously addictive side dish. They have a satisfyingly soft inside that balances with their golden, buttery, and delicately crunchy exterior. The garlic adds a pungent touch with just the right strength. The parmesan taste isn’t very apparent, but the tater tots are so delicious that they don’t require another flavor.

Coconut Brown Sugar Latte: 8/10 ($7.50)

Lilia Wilkiewicz / M-A Chronicle

This latte is very milky and has no harsh coffee flavor. The foam topping the beverage makes the otherwise plain drink special with a sweet honey flavor. The coffee itself has a delicious, nutty, and slightly roasted flavor.

Strawberry Matcha Latte: 7/10 ($8)

Similar to the Coconut Brown Sugar Latte, the Strawberry Matcha is mediocre yet enjoyable. Despite having only a small layer of strawberry at the bottom, the fruit’s flavor entirely overpowers that of the matcha. Whatever matcha could be tasted is further drowned out by the milk. For those who aren’t a fan of the classic, earthy matcha flavor but still want to embody the trendy aesthetic, this is a perfect performative drink.

Classic Avocado Toast: 6/10 ($10)

And the crowd goes… mild! The classic avocado toast is exactly how it looks: basic, soft, and boring. The chili flakes, bagel seasoning, and garlic butter sound promising on the menu, yet the toast delivers little actual flavor. Luckily, the bread’s unique tenderness and perfectly crunchy crust salvage this combination. Another benefit is the predictability of each bite, avoiding the usual problems of avocado toast: a weird texture, lumps of brown avocado, and random spots of over-seasoning. It’s sure to spark joy in baby food enthusiasts and wisdom teeth patients everywhere.

Green Dream: 5/10 ($13)

Ivy Watrous / M-A Chronicle

The bread of the avocado toast sets high expectations for the popular breakfast sandwich, but the buns are soggy. The heart of the sandwich includes scrambled eggs and avocado, and it is garnished with other flavors like garlic aioli, cheddar cheese, and chives. The mushy egg dominates the flavor palette, and the lack of spices makes it very mild. The arugula adds a healthy, fresh crunch, and the avocado is perfectly soft. The garlic aioli sauce provides a satisfyingly sweet touch, but otherwise, the flavor is very bland.
