Since its opening this past August, The Baker Next Door has quickly become a favorite gathering spot for locals in downtown Redwood City. The menu features all kinds of beverages, including coffee and sparkling refreshers, as well as inventive pastries, freshly baked bread, and sandwiches. The atmosphere is warm and inviting, with high-top bar seating and trendy decor that matches the delicious food.
Sparkling Matcha Lemonade ($6.50): 4/10

This sparkling matcha lemonade is visually appealing with the perfect shade of green. However, the flavors didn’t blend as smoothly as expected; the matcha and lemonade clashed, resulting in a bitter taste. The carbonation was also lacking, making it less sparkling than advertised. Though still refreshing, the drink offers a unique but not harmonious twist on lemonade.
Latte ($5.50): 9/10

A hot latte is an easy test of a café’s quality, and this one sets a high bar. The latte arrives with a perfectly foamy top and a neat floral design. The roast was not too bitter, and the drink felt smooth with a harmonious blend of acidity, bitterness, and sweetness. However, the latte is a bit too milky, but that can vary depending on personal preference.
Kouign Amann ($6): 8/10

The kouign-amann, a pastry that’s notoriously difficult to perfect, is expertly baked to a golden, crisp finish. Layers of flaky dough form a tight structure, with crunchy sugar crystals and a sticky syrup that adds to the sweet flavor. While it’s delicious, the richness of the syrup makes it difficult to finish in one sitting.
Ham and Cheese Morning Bun ($7): 9/10

The ham and cheese morning bun is a revamp of a typical ham and cheese croissant. On par with its visually appealing tight-knit spiral design, the pastry is delicious and perfectly textured. The pastry flakes when bitten into, and the interior is soft and chewy. The gruyere cheese and country ham are flavorful and complement each other in the interior of the spiral. This pastry is a perfect start to the day or a tasty midday snack.
Tomato and Feta Batea ($7): 10/10

The tomato and feta bateau is a standout pastry that features a crisp outer layer and a soft, tender inside. The flavors of the tomato blend beautifully with the feta, which is creamy and tart. Hints of thyme and black garlic shone through the salty pastry, making this tasty savory treat a must-try.
