Bears Celebrate an A-Maize-Ing Corn Day

Leadership hosted its fourth annual Corn Day on the Green during lunch on Thursday. The Green was decorated with corn-themed balloons and colorful posters, and featured music, cornhole, and a variety of corn-related snacks.

Leadership promoted the event through Instagram and flyers, reminding people to prepare and wear corn-themed outfits, such as green and yellow, or dress up like a farmer to fully enjoy the Corn Day spirit.

“I think it’s just fun to celebrate. Another similar event is how we also do Pickle Day, so I think it’s kind of funny, and it’s sort of a good way to have a good time during lunch,” Leadership student and junior Charlie Weber said.

“I think sometimes we just need to celebrate things that are silly, and there’s nothing political about this. There’s nothing serious, it’s just Corn Day. I’m more than willing to celebrate,” English teacher Susie Choe said.

During lunch, students gathered around food stands set up by Leadership students that sold corn dogs, corn nuts, candy corn, corn pops, and popcorn. “It was a little challenging, because we had to figure out how to cook all the corn dogs, but eventually we were able to. We also just put out a bunch of tables and had to order all this, but eventually it worked out really well,” Weber said.

Students also played fun, competitive games of cornhole in the middle of the Green, while other students enjoyed spectating. “Everybody’s welcome. You don’t even have to be good at anything, you just have to come walk around and be silly,” Choe said.

“There’s so many things you wouldn’t know that are made of corn. It’s just so fun to be able to put them all together, and I think it’s something that you would never really think of doing. But then when you do it, everyone loves it so much,” sophomore Olivia Dillon said. “I think that’s what makes it so fun.”
