Boys Tennis Conquers Carlmont

The boys tennis team swept against the Carlmont Scots with a team score of 5-2 on Thursday afternoon. 

Doubles one team seniors Calvin Linnert and Rowan Hanley were first to finish their match, quickly winning their match 6-1, 6-0. Linnert’s serve was strong, allowing them to blow through their opponents. “Today my serve was really, really good,” Linnert said.

Next, singles four sophomore Lawrence Chao left the court, winning his match 6-1, 6-1.

After a long back and forth, doubles two juniors Connor Bae and Raphael Pierres clinched a tight match. After losing their first set 6-2, the duo picked up the next set 6-2, and the third set 10-2 in the super tiebreak. “We were out of it for the first set, but we came back,” Pierres said. 

At singles one, senior Aditya Kudaravalli had a tough match against Carlmont’s top player, losing 6-3, 6-1. “He would put the ball wherever he wanted, and I wasn’t taking advantage of when he was missing,” Kudaravalli said. “Tennis is a sport that really tests you mentally, especially in singles.”

Spectators watched in anticipation as the final three matches wrapped up. Singles two and doubles three finished in quick succession, with sophomore Cole Aylaian winning 6-1, 6-4, and juniors Ishmael Safdari and Gabriel Sheik turning their match around after a 6-7 loss in the first game, winning 6-2 in the second set and 10-6 in the super tiebreak.

With one match left, the team enthusiastically cheered for singles three, junior Cubby Derrough. Derrough was last off the court, ending with a 6-1, 7-6 loss.

Overall, the Bears beat the Scots 5-2 for the home opener match. “We’ve had a rivalry all four years I’ve been here,” Kudaravalli said.

The Bears will return to the court away against the Aragon Dons at 4 p.m.
