Boys Waterpolo Scrapes a Win in Season Opener

The boys waterpolo team defeated Saint Mary’s 10-9 Friday in a come-from-behind win; down a goal with 2 minutes left in the game, sophomore Julian Montoya got a key steal, which led to a counterattack goal. A few seconds later, junior Michael Heller sealed the deal for the Bears with an outside shot that slipped past the St. Mary’s goalie. Heller ended the game with 5 goals, followed by senior Zach de Haaff with 3. Seniors Elias Nasr and Willem Holzrichter scored one goal each.

Montoya commented, “We’re definitely a lot better this year and we have a strong senior class, I think we are good contenders to win PAL.” Having the game during lunch allowed many students to watch, as the stands of Spieker Pool were packed from the beginning. Heller said that “It was great to be able to have so many of our friends watch us play, it definitely motivated us to beat [St. Marys]. This was a great start to the season.” The boys waterpolo team will look to continue their success when they play Carlmont this Wednesday.
