Digital Photography Class Hosts First-Ever Sports Media Day

The Digital Photography class hosted M-A’s first-ever Media Day in the New Gym this Saturday. Winter sports varsity athletes were given the opportunity to get professional sports photos and videos in uniform.

Each team arrived at their given time and was directed to senior Jack Preston. Preston had all the seniors sign his camera lens to create a signing video. “I’m glad we got all the sports photos and it’s a good way to get everyone together,” Preston said.

After their signing video, each team had 30 minutes to take photos in front of backdrops and with props of their choosing. Athletes got solo shots and group photos, along with one big team photo at the end.

Preston then directed teams outside to film their hype videos. The photo class brought multiple smoke bombs to use in the background of the videos. “I think it’s very beneficial to the teams and creates some cool photos and memories,” senior soccer player Pablo Martinez said.

Spearheaded by sophomore Mackenzie Morales, senior Faith Schubin, and junior Laila Krefetz, this project involved a lot of communication and planning. “We wanted to showcase our players in a new way. We wanted them to have props, to do all of these backdrops, and for them to be together,” Krefetz said.

“It’s a lot like the photos you get when you’re playing in college. We wanted to do that for our athletes because we know how it’s important to them,” Morales added.

After a successful first run, the group is hoping to take the event to the next level for next season.

“The goal for the future of Media Day is to make it a recurring event. In future years, we’d like to do it every season for every sport, and eventually, we’d want to increase past varsity and do it for all levels,” Schubin said.

“This is what I live for as a teacher, seeing students want something and making it a reality,” Digital Photography teacher Sarah Frivold said.
