The girls’ golf team barely lost to the Hillsdale Knights 279-276 on Monday. Coach Jeff Benrey said he was “very proud” of the team’s performance against a challenging opponent on a difficult course under the hot sun. “I think a lot of players are starting to play better,” Benrey said.
Sophomore Cleo Benrey finished with 55 strokes. Despite having the second-lowest score on the team, she felt she had room for improvement. “I definitely need to work on starting at the tee box,” she said.
Sophomore Linh Nguyen and senior Charlotte Steinmetz had the lower score in their matches against Hillsdale 57-65 and 56-67 respectively. Senior Silvana Schmidt barely had a higher score 64-63.
Junior Evie Filipek was proud of her drives and holding her own while playing Hillsdale’s two best golfers. “I think we did really well,” she said. However, her competitiveness led her to make risky game-time decisions. “I would improve my decision to putt or chip balls,” said Filipek.
Assistant coach Erin Moslander stressed the importance of maintaining a positive attitude in the face of defeat. “I think that they could really improve on keeping up their spirits,” she said.
Moslander also highlighted focus as a key contributor to success. “Golf is a 90% mental and a 10% skill kind of game,” she said.
The Bears will play in a scrimmage against the Burlingame Panthers at home on Monday at 3:00 p.m.
