Girls Tennis Falls to Carlmont

Girls tennis suffered a loss against the Carlmont Scots, one of their hardest opponents this season, on Thursday afternoon. Despite the final score of 1-6, the team’s hard work and determination was clear on the court.

Senior *Tessa Ellingson, singles one, was the first to finish her match, winning a decisive victory in straight sets 6-0, 6-1.

Jobst runs back to the baseline after returning a shot.

Next off the court was junior Hailey Hintze, singles three. Despite the tough 0-6 loss in both sets, she expressed her optimism for the rest of the season. “Looking at the rest of the team, they were playing pretty good, and it only gets better from here,” Hintze said.

Following the first two singles games, doubles one pair senior Holly Cheung and junior Acacia Yoon finished their game with a 1-6, 3-6 loss. They were soon followed by doubles three pair seniors Nia Sadrzadeh and Sophia Jobst. In spite of their 1-6, 2-6 loss, they’re proud of their performance so early in the season. “I was able to hit a lot of the shots I was originally struggling with, so I’m confident that we can do better going into the rest of the season,” Jobst said.

The Bears fell further behind with two more lost matches. Though freshman Adeleine Soltys, singles four, split sets with her opponent, she ultimately lost with a final score of 2-6, 6-3, and 6-10 in the third set tiebreak. “I just gotta keep doing what I’m doing and I’ll slowly find my confidence,” said Soltys.

Hou gets ready to return a forehand.

Sophomore Marissa Hou, singles two, started her match one set down. Hou was in the lead in her second set, almost splitting sets with her opponent, but ended the match with a 2-6, 5-7 loss. “I was pretty nervous, but it was exciting because there wasn’t much pressure on us and we knew we would play good matches,” Hou said.

Carlmont finished as number one in the league last year, ending the Bears’ streak of eight consecutive league titles. Regardless of the loss, with more practices and games coming up, they’re sure to improve throughout the season.

The Bears will return to home court on Tuesday at 4 p.m. to take on the Sequoia Ravens.
