Girls Tennis Overpowered by Carlmont

The girls tennis team suffered a sweeping defeat to the Carlmont Scots with a final score of 7-0 on Thursday afternoon.

Senior Hailey Hintze* was the first one off the court. Despite her attempts to overcome her opponent’s fast and strong groundstrokes, Hintze lost 6-0. In her second set, her opponent was able to hold pressure, forcing another 6-0 defeat.

Following Hintze, singles three senior Queenie Hsieh was the next off the court. “Before, I was a bit nervous, but I went in with the mindset of just having a good match,” Hsieh said. Despite strong play, her opponent’s disciplined defense caused her to lose the first set 6-1. Refusing to let her initial setback lower her morale, Hsieh came closer in her second set, but she was unable to counter her opponents perfect forehands, causing a losing score of 6-2.

Subsequently, doubles one seniors Parmis Hooghooghi and Acacia Yoon lost 6-0, 6-1. The score, however, didn’t represent their complementary teamwork and strategy, playing a very solid game, only coming up short due to their opponents’ impressive coordination and ability.

Following up, doubles two, consisting of juniors Julia Maggio and Aarushi Srivastava, were defeated in a tough battle. Towards the beginning of the game, they were able to hold their ground, but after losing a double break from the opponent’s incredible offence, they lost the first set 6-2. Their second set went just as fast with another score of 6-2.

Next off the court was doubles three, and despite sophomores Anna Kate Brown and Julianne Hanson’s tenacity and teamwork, they lost the first set 6-2. Their opponents, with their boosted morale, won the second set 6-1.

Much later, for singles one, junior Marissa Hou was defeated by her opponent. Although the score was 6-0, 6-0, Hou held her ground, making sure her opponent had to fight for every single point with great groundstroke technique and ball placement.

Finishing off was singles four senior Yara Abuelsorour. Despite losing the first set 6-3, she made sure not to let that stop her. “I could see my opponent was kind of visibly angry,” Abuelsorour said, “I used that to my advantage and played on her emotions.” Abuelsorour tactically pulled away the second set 7-6. Even with her momentum, the opponent’s impressive skills eventually overpowered her in a tiebreaker with a final score of 10-6.

“The opponents from this school are all really nice, and I really admired their attitudes,” Hsieh said. “I felt a bit regretful that I didn’t play harder, but it was ultimately a good match.”

The Bears will return to the court against Half Moon Bay on Tuesday away at 4 p.m.
