The M-A girls varsity basketball team beat Sequoia 83 to 53 on Friday, January 10 in their season opener for the Pacific Athletic League (PAL).
M-A came out strong, leading 27-14 after the first quarter. The Bears kept the ball moving and maintained their quick offense with shots from Delilah Kline, Megan Sparrow, Greer Hoyem, Ofa Sili, Ilana Baer, Carly McLanahan, and Mele Kailahi. With the Bears’ tough press, the Sequoia Ravens struggled to make their shots. M-A kept the lead throughout the game and entered half time 50 to 24.
Kline, Sparrow, Hoyem, and Sili continued to lead the Bears’ offensive. Senior Kline scored 17 points and junior Sili scored 16 points, helping secure the final victory. Assists by seniors Crowe and Kline also helped the Bears head into the fourth quarter with a comfortable lead, 69 to 40.
The Bears continued to shoot, rebound, and defend throughout the fourth quarter. Sili was quick with rebounds and M-A did not allow the Ravens to make up for lost points. The Bears kept the lead and ended the game, 83-53, an impressive 30 point lead.
After the game, Kline noted, “As our first league game, beating Sequoia was a great way to start off our season. We all contributed and came together as a team and were able to win the game with a large spread. Speaking for the whole team, we had a huge boost of confidence from this win and are all looking forward to going far in playoffs!”
The next M-A girls varsity basketball game is today, Friday, January 15 at 6:15 p.m. at Carlmont High School. Be sure to come out and support the Bears!
