M-A Teams Up to Clean Up at Custodial Appreciation Night

Leadership held its annual Custodial Appreciation Night to celebrate the school’s hardworking custodians on Tuesday. Organized by seniors Lucas Selvik and Finn Gallo, the event was a night full of recognition, respect, and hard work.

The event kicked off at 4 p.m., when groups of students were paired with custodians to help clean different parts of the school. In eight groups, Leadership cleaned the campus in just an hour and a half. In addition to the help cleaning, the afternoon was an opportunity “for Leadership to connect with the custodians a bit better,” Selvik said. Abel Ruiz, a custodian who has been working at M-A for the past six years, emphasized that what truly made his job the best was “getting to know the students a little bit.”

Cleaning was followed by a rewarding dinner of steaks and hamburgers made by Leadership teacher Michael Amoroso. Custodians and students shared a meal and answered M-A trivia questions to end the night off.

Gabriel Welch, another custodian, explained that dinner was his favorite part of the function. “I like the jokes that everyone is making. It is nice to be part of a community,” he said.

Gallo emphasized the importance of spreading love and acknowledging custodians outside of the annual celebration. “We should make their jobs as easy as possible,” he said. Ways to do this include picking up after yourself, showing appreciation, and encouraging others to do the same.
