Doing your hair can be a lengthy and tiring process—one that often comes with the risk of heat damage. Sometimes even a quick use of a styling tool can burn your hair. Fortunately, there are many ways to style your hair without the damage or hassle. Put that flat iron away—here are some of the best heatless alternatives.
Sock Curls

A straightforward process, sock curls are the perfect option for anyone looking for loose, effortless curls. This method was popularized for its comfort and accessibility, since no additional purchases are required. “I like [sock curls] because it’s easy for me to do and it doesn’t take as much time, especially in the mornings, when I’m already busy,” freshman Milena Stoyanov said.
All that’s needed is a pair of long socks and hair ties. Before bed, section hair into two parts and wrap each around a sock, then secure each with a hair tie. In the morning, simply unwrap the hair for soft, bouncy curls.
Braids

Straightforward yet effective, sleeping in braids creates a ready-to-wear style by morning. As one of the easiest heatless hairstyles, braids work for a variety of hair types and lengths, and hold their shape overnight. “I like sleeping in braids because it makes my hair really nice,” sophomore Anya Wheeler said. “It’s really comfy to sleep in and it gives you beach waves.”
Braiding your hair before bed, either wet or dry, can create natural-looking beach waves that can be styled in the morning or just worn as is. “They look really good, and it’s not tangled [in the morning],” Wheeler said. French, Dutch, and standard braids all work, making this a versatile yet easy option for people who want a crimped or curled look without all the fuss.
Rods

Popularized on social media, curler rods are what people automatically think of when they hear “heatless curls.” They can be used for loose waves, tight curls, or even a blowout. Curler rods are ideal for everyone; side sleepers can set it up going from their forehead to the back of their neck, and back sleepers can have it go from ear to ear. “It gives nice curls, it’s relatively quick to use, and it doesn’t really fall out of my hair that much,” freshman Sofia Olsen said.
Wrapping hair around the rods and applying a small amount of hairspray can leave hair styled and ready in the morning—without the damage caused by heat. Affordable and comfy to sleep in, curler rods give you silky hair and an exciting reveal in the morning.
