Students’ Favorite Comfort Shows & Movies

With the winter season upon us, curling up on the couch and watching television provides a warm, cozy way to spend free time. Many students have favorite shows, whether childhood classics or binge worthy series, that they find specifically comforting. Take a look at some of students’ favorites.

“Stranger Things”

Freshman Leanna Cuevas opts for a nostalgic route when choosing what to watch. “My favorite comfort show is ‘Stranger Things,’” Cuevas said. The show follows kids who discover paranormal activities set against the iconic backdrop of the 1980s, complete with a synth-pop soundtrack. “[I like how] the kids grow up throughout the seasons,” Cuevas said.

“How To Train Your Dragon”

“I’ve watched [How To Train Your Dragon] since childhood, so I feel like it really connects me back to [my childhood],” sophomore Paula Guerrero said. “How To Train Your Dragon” features a dragon trainer named Hiccup, who must explore different worlds while creating a bond with his dragon, Toothless, making for an exciting lighthearted show.

“Gilmore Girls”

“I really like Gilmore Girls,” freshman Kimberly Vargas said. The show follows a young, single mother, Lorelai Gilmore, and her teenage daughter, Rory, who function more as best friends than mother and daughter. Together, they navigate relationships, new beginnings, and life in their idyllic Connecticut town, Stars Hollow. “It’s a really cute, coming of age TV show with a lot of drama,” she said.

“Kicking’ It”

Senior Giovanni Torres chose a familiar childhood TV show as his favorite. “[My favorite show] is probably “Kickin’ It.” That was the show I always came home to watch after school,” Torres said. “Kickin’ It” is a family friendly martial arts comedy show about an underdog dojo that rises to success.

“The Conjuring”

Instead of television, freshman Henry Virula prefers movies for comfort instead. “I like ‘The Conjuring’ because it’s very scary and it distracts me from other stuff,” he said. “The Conjuring” is a supernatural horror movie based on events that paranormal investigators have experienced. “The scariness blows everything away,” said Virula.

“Brooklyn Nine-Nine”

Junior Mia Frias turns to comedy and excitement for comfort, with her show of choice being “Brooklyn Nine-Nine.” This sitcom centers a group of detectives at Brooklyn’s 99th precinct. “It’s just a funny show about two cops who end up liking each other, but it takes them years to get there and they have a lot of crazy experiences,” Frias said.

“Ratatouille”

Junior Mo’Rhai Balinton prefers a classic childhood movie for comfort. “[My favorite comfort movie is] Ratatoullie, because it’s just a great movie and I love food,” she said. “Ratatouille” is about a rat named Remy with a dream to become a chef—despite it being a very anti-rodent profession—who teams up with a restaurant’s garbage boy. Together, they whip up delicious dishes and thrive in the kitchen.

“All American”

For some students, the key to a perfect comfort show is relatability. “My favorite comfort TV show would probably be ‘All American,’ because it shows the reality of people, and how they’re living,” sophomore Alyssa Hernandez said. “All American” is a series about a high school student who transfers to a new school for football.

“Culinary Class Wars”

Sophomore Maximus Vardharajan prefers non-fiction, reality shows. “My favorite comfort show is ‘Culinary Class Wars’ on Netflix. I really enjoy the cooking and the food,” he said. This show is a competition between chefs of all levels to see who can come up with the best culinary creation.

Sosi is a freshman in her first year of journalism. She is looking forward to writing about different events. Outside of school she enjoys playing tennis and spending time with family and friends.
