Students’ Favorite Throwback Movies

Ferris Bueller’s Day Off

Senior Aidan Sharp was too young to remember the first time he watched Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, a cult classic following charismatic high school senior Ferris Bueller as he skips school for a one-day journey exploring Chicago’s landmarks, with his school’s principal on his trail. “It’s a really funny movie and it reminds me of high school,” Sharp, who is now the same age as Bueller, said.

Titanic

Freshman Maite Caballero was 5 years old when she first saw Titanic, which tells the tragic story of the wealthy Rose DeWitt Bukater and the poor artist Jack Dawson, who both board the RMS Titanic. The movie explores themes of love and class struggle as the two fall in love. “It’s historical, and it’s a love story,” Caballero said. “I rewatch it a lot.”

Back to the Future

Senior Eybard Cabrera was 7 years old when he first watched Back to the Future. “Really good movie, really good actors,” he said. The movie follows ’80s teen Marty McFly, who gets sent to the past by his friend Doc Brown—Cabrera’s favorite character. There, McFly accidentally stops his parents from meeting and has to race to save his own existence and return to 1985. With two more clever installments, the series is perfect to binge over the holidays.

How to Train Your Dragon

Junior Giulia Cassese loves the 2010 animated classic How to Train Your Dragon. “It’s just a really enjoyable movie, especially when I was a kid,” she said. The movie is set in a mythical Viking village where fighting dragons is a way of life. When shy teen Hiccup befriends a dragon, he discovers that there might be more to the creatures than he thought.

Almost Famous

“It was a revelation. I cried at the end,” sophomore Lily Hackett said about her favorite throwback movie, Almost Famous. The movie is a coming-of-age story about teen music journalist William Miller, who goes on tour with an up-and-coming rock band. “It just makes me feel so happy inside because it incorporates all of my favorite things. I love ’70s music. I love the road trip aspect of it. Everything about it,” she said.

Good Burger

Sophomore Vanessa Polly was first introduced to the movie Good Burger through her siblings, and it has stuck as her favorite ever since. The movie follows two zany teenage fast-food workers who try to save their restaurant, Good Burger, from the new burger place across the street. “I like movies that I don’t really have to think about,” she said. “It’s very nostalgic and easy to watch.”
