Between dye, styling products, updos, and natural looks, hair can be a striking accessory that allows students to show off their unique personalities. Let’s take a look at some of the expressive styles worn by students.

Sophomore Sarai Rodriguez sported a purple and magenta balayage inspired by Raven from the animated TV show Teen Titans. “I was scrolling when I saw Raven pop up, and I was already trying to get rid of black,” she said. Rodriguez is no stranger to colorful hair, previously having dyed her naturally brown hair red and black. “For now, I’m going to keep it purple,” she said. “It just depends on how I feel.”

Senior Ash Rancourt showed off a brown and blond split dye. Rancourt cited the distinct hairstyles of cartoon characters as his inspiration. “I like the way it looks when cartoon characters have cool hair,” he explained. Rancourt has been dyeing his hair since 7th grade—purple is next in the lineup. “I really like changing my hair as much as possible,” he added.

Junior Jamarlo Jackson wears his natural hair, a choice, he explained, that matches his personality. “Something that inspired me to have my hair like this is just the natural look of it, letting it be free,” he said. While Jackson changes his hairstyle often, having tried dreadlocks and braids in the past, his natural hair is his favorite.

“It’s more fun to have colored hair,” freshman Ella Marks said. Marks’ naturally black hair is highlighted with shiny, dark blue strands that glimmer in the sun. She plans to return to her signature dyed red hair in the future, but is loving the blue for now.

Freshmen Theo Saenz, Sebastian Saenz, and Mattias Sharp got matching bleached buzz cuts this summer. “We were bored in the summer getting ready for M-A,” S. Saenz said. “You know, summer vibes,” T. Saenz added.

Freshman Keke McGraw wore her vibrant pink braids in an updo. “It’s a cultural thing,” she explained. “I always do my hair in braids because it’s a protective style.” McGraw changes her hair colors seasonally, but the bright, eye-catching pink is one of her favorites so far.
