Style Watch: Phone cases

Beyond their duty of protecting phones from nasty drops, phone cases also serve as a stylish reflection of each student’s taste and personality. From simple, meaningful designs to colorful patterns and handy add-ons, they’ve become a subtle but elaborate form of self-expression on campus.

Rayan Khabaza

For freshman Rayan Khabaza, her phone case carries a bit of history. “I got [my phone case] from Otterbox. I’ve had many, but this one just really sticks out to me,” she said. “I’ve had it since middle school.” She added that the case has protected her phone through intense drops and falls.

Freshman Isaiah Mora appreciates the versatility of his phone case. “When I’m watching YouTube, [my phone] has this little cool stand that I can pull out. It’s like a little nice leather material,” he said. 

In addition to its practical utility, his case also carries a story. “I was at a basketball tournament in L.A. when I bought this,” Mora said.

Max Weiss

Sophomore Max Weiss loves the style and texture of his simple, yet popular phone case. “It’s nice and slick, and smooth in hand,” he said. He added that it saved his phone from many drops. “It seemed like the best and it was the cheapest on Amazon.”

Caleb Swartzberg

Junior Caleb Swartzberg’s phone case doesn’t just function as a case, but also as a wallet. “I don’t have to carry a wallet if I put all my money and my credit card in my phone,” Swartzberg said. “I only have to keep track of one thing.” Swartzberg has had this case for around three years now thanks to its durability and reliability.

Freshman Amy Alina-Tapia chose a Hello Kitty case because it fits her personal style. “It’s very coquette and it’s very aesthetic,” she said. “It’s a very cute, very pretty, very petite phone case.” Her choice of design shows how small details can really express a sense of fashion and personality.

Julian is a freshman in his first year of journalism. He is excited to write about sports games and community events. In his free time, he loves to be in the pool playing water polo and hanging out with friends.

Nalin is a freshman in his first year of journalism. He enjoys writing about breaking news, events in the community, politics, and financials of the community. In addition to journalism, Nalin plays Water Polo and trying new food.
