American Cancer Society Discovery Shop

Shop with a purpose at the Menlo Park American Cancer Society Discovery Shop. Every purchase here directly supports cancer research—100% of the profits are donated to the American Cancer Society. The collection of well-loved items ranges from Jellycats to faux ostrich fur belts, with donations accepted through back-door drop-offs. Staffed mainly by dedicated elderly volunteers, the store creates a warm and welcoming atmosphere. The unique selection and mission-focused shopping experience make this store a meaningful stop for those who want to make a difference while finding great items.

The Shop

Stepping into The Shop in downtown Menlo Park feels like entering a boutique straight out of a design catalog. Each item has been carefully curated and displayed by section and color. The Shop operates as a fundraiser for the Junior League of Palo Alto-Mid Peninsula (JLPA-MP), an organization of women dedicated to contributing to the community through volunteer action and collaboration. Proceeds fund non-profit grants, philanthropic endeavours, training for women, and community projects focused on fighting systemic poverty. The JLPA-MP has partnered with HIP Housing to provide rent scholarships for families, and has also created Project Mindfulness, which offers social-emotional learning materials to elementary school children.

Afterwards

Afterwards specializes in upscale women’s fashion, accessories, curated home decor, and artistic pieces. Clothing prices range from $200 to $3,000, making most pieces a little out of students’ price range. Located within the concrete buildings along El Camino Real, Afterwards is undoubtedly a hidden gem. Check it out for sustainable dressing options for formal events, such as prom or homecoming. Offering a curated selection of premium items, this store is the go-to place for those looking to invest in high quality pieces for special occasions.
