Flashing lights lit up the Green as students gathered for Leadership’s Welcome Back Dance on Friday night. With upbeat music, delicious food, and a lively crowd, the event set the tone for the exciting school year.
Students dressed in their best island-inspired attire, with vibrant flower necklaces and Aloha shirts. “Since we’re coming out of summer, we decided to have a fun tropical theme,” event organizer and senior Mia Sanchez said.

A crowd formed in front of the DJ’s stand as he played a variety of songs, including “NOKIA” by Drake and “La Chona” by Los Tucanes de Tijuana. “It was really energetic,” sophomore Yuwa Ishida said. “The variety of songs gave everybody a chance to sing along.”
The crowd grew bigger and more spirited as the dance progressed. By the end of the night, people were forming circles, yelling their favorite song lyrics, and showing off their dynamic moves.
“Everyone was really into it and bringing their energy,” sophomore Jaime Parada said. “It’s kind of awkward when everyone is just standing around.”
Alongside the Green, flowers rimmed the concession tables. A tiki bar was set up, serving tropical drinks including a vibrant blue, ocean-inspired beverage. Baked goods, snacks, and popcorn were also available for students to have throughout the night.
The Welcome Back Dance is special for many students. “It’s a traditional dance, which is what makes it special. It’s something that people can look forward to each year when school starts up again,” Sanchez said.
“I’m excited for the new school year. Hopefully, the dance sets the tone for the rest of the year,” Parada said.
