M-A’s Birthday Club Strengthens Inclusion and Recognition

Each of us has one day annually marked with candles, cake, and presents. Birthdays have been a way to celebrate someone’s special day and spread joy for years. At the Birthday Club, those celebrations become endless, making students feel recognized and inspired throughout the school year.

The club meets on the last Friday of every month in D-4. At the start of lunch, students walk in, grab refreshments, and sit around the room chatting. Cups of hot chocolate, regular and iced coffee, and iced tea sit on a nearby table while members wait for the celebration to begin. “I wanted to have a birthday club because I remember everybody’s birthdays,” senior Ben Carlisle, the club president, said. According to B. Carlisle, his club’s goal is simple. “So we can wish people happy birthday,” he said.

A few minutes into the meeting, cupcakes were passed around and everyone joined in to sing in celebration of the students with February birthdays. The club was filled with a lively, joyful atmosphere, and students cheered for their classmates.

“This club is really fun, and it’s a really positive environment,” freshman Sia Teu said. When her birthday was celebrated, she said the experience made her feel recognized. “Ben got me cupcakes and cookies and they sang Happy Birthday to me,” she said.

Freshman Matthew Carlisle, brother to B. Carlisle, said his favorite part of the club is the treats offered during the meetings. “I always get stuffed. They give cupcakes and cookies,” he said. Although his own birthday has yet to be celebrated with the club, he is looking forward to it. “It’s going to be so epic,” M. Carlisle said.

“I joined because Ben is the leader, and he’s really supportive of everyone,” Teu said. She added that the club is a great way to make new friends and connections through celebration.

Through cupcakes, singing, and recognition, the Birthday Club turns an ordinary school day into something memorable for all students. Come during lunch in room D-4 on the last Friday of every month to celebrate!
