Earning Her Spot on the Baseball Diamond

Freshman Chloe Cresson, the only girl on M-A’s JV baseball team, has been playing baseball her whole life and is now stepping into high school ball.

Cresson began playing baseball when she was younger because without tee-ball for softball at the time, baseball was her only option, and she quickly fell in love with the sport. “There was no tee-ball for softball, so I started with baseball, and from there I was able to meet so many people and form so many good connections,” Cresson said. These wholesome early experiences helped solidify her decision to continue her baseball journey as she got older. Additionally, she created a long, loving bond with her dad over the sport.

As she continued playing, Cresson began to notice underlying differences between baseball and softball. Besides the ball and the different field sizes, she realized the unique mental aspects of both games. “You have to have a ton of mental ability to block out distractions in softball, because you have many friends, which could make it harder to lock in,” she said.

On the other hand, Cresson finds it easier to focus while playing baseball. “Since I don’t know many people outside the sport, it makes me lock in easier,” she said. These experiences have helped grow Cresson as an individual, as she practices staying coordinated in high-stress situations.

Going into high school as a pitcher and middle infielder, Cresson knew she’d get treated somewhat differently as the only girl. However, Cresson expressed that the M-A baseball community has made it really easy for her to adapt and fit in. “I think my team has been super welcoming and overall really nice about it,” she said.

Because of the supportive environment, Cresson has built strong connections with her teammates and coaches. The welcoming energy from her teammates has helped her grow as a player, allowing her to improve her skills and contribute to her team. While playing on the JV team, she has not only developed her baseball skills but also gotten the chance to create long-lasting memories.

Cresson recognized how unique her situation is, greatly appreciating the opportunity she has been given. Being different can sometimes be challenging, but Cresson chooses to embrace it and make the best out of the experience. “The community of the team is super great, I really get to learn so much, and I appreciate the privilege to be able to play alongside other skilled players,” she said.

From starting at a young age to now playing on the JV team, Cresson has remained committed to the sport through it all. Even though there are many challenges, she keeps pushing herself, determined to succeed, and continue working hard.
