California Hand Roll ($7.70): 8/10

The California Roll is the reliable cornerstone of any sushi menu, and MJ’s version doesn’t disappoint. This California roll is made with crab, avocado, and cucumber, rolled in sushi rice with a thin layer of seaweed, and finished with sesame seeds. The avocado is soft and creamy, the cucumber adds a light crunch, and the crab provides a subtle sweetness. The sesame seeds add a faint nuttiness to each bite. Together, the ingredients are well proportioned, with no single element overpowering others. The roll is one of the more classic items on the menu, and a reliable order for the table.

Avocado Maki ($5.89): 9/10

The avocado roll contains a single filling of sliced avocado wrapped in sushi rice and nori. The avocado is ripe, with a clean, mild flavor. Since avocado is the roll’s only filling, the rice and nori play a larger part than in more complex rolls. The rice is lightly seasoned and provides a soft neutral base, while the nori adds a faint brininess that balances the richness of the avocado. It is a simple roll, but the quality of the ingredients makes it work well. It also pairs naturally with soy sauce and a small amount of wasabi for those who want more flavor or a spicy kick. The roll is a good option for vegetarians or anyone looking for something light.

Beef Teriyaki ($22.41): 7/10

The teriyaki beef is sliced and cooked with a soy-based teriyaki glaze and served with steamed rice and vegetables. The glaze is sweet and savory, coating the meat evenly. The beef is well-cooked and perfectly tender, absorbing the sauce well. Steamed rice comes on the side, plain and simply cooked, offering a neutral balance to the seasoned beef. A side of greens completes the dish, adding freshness and texture to the plate without competing with its main components. The beef is a loaded entree that works well as a main course for those who prefer something cooked over raw sushi dishes.

Miso Soup ($2.45): 8/10

The miso soup is made with dashi broth, white miso paste, tofu, and green onion. The broth is warm and savory without being overly salty. The tofu is soft and absorbs the broth’s flavor, while the green onion provides a bit of freshness. Served at the beginning of the meal, the miso soup makes a nice light opener before the rolls and entrees arrive.
