Bear Bites: Mademoiselle Colette Brings Parisian Chic to Menlo Park

Located in downtown Menlo Park, Mademoiselle Colette is a stylish French bakery known for its elegant pastries, bright café setting, and lively atmosphere. When Mademoiselle Colette opened its first location in downtown Menlo Park in 2015, the M-A Chronicle wrote an article titled “Locally Owned Pastry Shop Mademoiselle Colette Deserves Our Support”. Now, more than a decade later, the Parisian-inspired pastry shop has four locations across the Bay Area and was voted among the 10 best bakeries in Silicon Valley. It seems the community took our recommendation to heart. Come as early as you can for the best chance to grab a delicious pastry.

Hazelnut Cake ($8.60): 7/10

Aria Folkerts / M-A Chronicle

The hazelnut cake is a moist hazelnut pound cake, topped with a rich chocolate ganache and roasted hazelnuts, and dusted with powdered sugar. It is hearty yet delicate, an upscale twin to banana bread. The roasted hazelnuts add crunch to the first bite, and the chocolate ganache pairs well with the pound cake base.

Fruit Viennoiserie ($7.40): 8/10

This fruit viennoiserie is the perfect mix of fresh raspberries and a flaky, buttery traditional croissant. The delicious pastry is both summery, with its sweet flavors, and comforting, thanks to its robust dough—though it may get a bit messy. Each bite balances tart fruit with rich, buttery layers, making the pastry feel light while still satisfying. Seasonal berries top it with a fresh, naturally sweet flavor that brightens the whole viennoiserie.

Shroom Croissant ($9.30): 7/10

Imagine traditional “pigs in a blanket” had a glow-up and became vegetarian. That’s essentially the Shroom Croissant. Wrapped in flaky croissant dough, filled with pan-fried mushrooms and parmesan cheese, this is a messy but great on-the-go lunch. The mushrooms are savory, and the exterior croissant layer is buttery and flaky. Though it tastes best warm, the Shroom Croissant is rich and appetizing no matter the temperature.

Sunshine Tomatoes ($9.30): 7/10

Similar to the Shroom Croissant, the Sunshine Tomato’s flavor profile is bright and cheerful. The roasted tomatoes give a pop of color and an intense umami flavor. The goat cheese sprinkled on top adds both creaminess and tang, complementing the tomatoes. The sundried tomato paste on the inside of the croissant builds on the roasted tomato’s flavors and altogether brings a joyful taste of midsummer.
