As the school year kicks off, Leadership brought back its bi-annual Class Clash Spirit Week. Throughout the week of Sept. 21 to Sept. 25, students dressed in playful, spirited outfits for each day’s theme and gathered in the New Gym at lunch to compete in games and earn points for their grade. Students brought infectious energy and school spirit to the first Class Clash of the school year.
Monday: Music
Starting off the week, Monday’s spirit day assigned each grade a different genre of music, with the freshmen dressed as rock, sophomores as country, juniors as hip-hop, and seniors as pop.
Leadership began the games with a music competition that complemented the day’s theme, such as playing “Choosin Texas” by Ella Langley for the sophomores. The pep in the room grew as students recognized songs and cheered for their classmates. In the end, the juniors took the win and one point, giving them the first lead of the week.
“I love the energy and how everyone is participating with school spirit,” sophomore Grace Moore said.
The spirit continued with the next competition, Crab Ball. Students worked together to kick a ball into the air while keeping it within a circle. At the end of the competition, both the sophomores and juniors earned one point.
To finish the first day, Leadership decided which grade’s outfits showed the most spirit. The sophomores took the point, leaving the sophomores and juniors tied at the top of the leaderboard, both with two points.
Tuesday: Alliance Day
Tuesday’s Alliance Day theme continued the electricity, raising the competition to a new level. Freshmen and juniors teamed up as soccer moms, while sophomores and seniors paired up as barbecue dads. During Alliance Day, whenever one grade earns a point, its partner grade receives a point as well. The day began with the loudest grade contest, where students cheered and screamed to represent their grade. The juniors ultimately took the win, securing a point for the team and the freshmen.
“We were looking for games that are going to get everyone excited, that will be fun to participate in and watch,” sophomore Annabel Blandford, a member of the Class Clash Leadership committee, said.
The next challenge required students to rely only on their sense of taste to distinguish flavors in a “Guess the Drink” game. As Leadership students blindfolded participants and covered them in trash bags, the gym filled with excitement. Students were tasked to identify different drinks while liquids such as milk and Fanta were poured over them. After a tie between the sophomores and the freshmen, the sophomores won in the tie-breaking round.
At the end of the day’s event, Leadership brought in teachers for a “Guess the Teacher From the Fun Fact” challenge. Leadership read facts about different teachers while students wrote their guesses on whiteboards. From hearing about teachers who had gone skydiving to those who had competed in professional snowboarding, the answers highlighted some of the most impressive accomplishments among teachers. The sophomores took the win after guessing that Craig Carson was an amazing snowboarder.
Wednesday: Wacky Wednesday
Wednesday began with a team challenge as Leadership asked for two students from each grade to compete in a three-legged race. Students had one leg tied to their partner’s, and they raced across the gym together. Despite struggles and occasional miscommunications, the juniors won, securing a point.
The gym got messy when the next game, apple bobbing, was announced. Students dunked their heads in water and searched for apples while their classmates cheered them on from the sidelines. In the end, the seniors won the competition and earned a point.
For messy games and silly challenges, Wacky Wednesday gave students the chance to embrace Class Clash. “I think we get a lot of inspo from social media these days, but also being able to get goofy with it is the best,” senior Willow Basta said.
To finish the day, the seniors dominated a jump rope competition, and the sophomores took the spirit point, reclaiming the lead with five points. The juniors followed close behind with four points, the seniors had two, and the freshmen had zero points.
Thursday: Under The Sea
As Class Clash neared its end, Leadership kept the energy high. Thursday’s theme had underclassmen dressed as surfers and sailors, while upperclassmen were lifeguards and scuba divers.
The first game was a human chain, where five students from each grade formed a circle and grabbed the hands of students across from them, creating a tangled group that they had to work together to untangle. Freshmen and juniors formed one team, while sophomores and seniors formed the other. And with a tie, the freshmen and seniors came out on top, each earning a point and boosting their grades’ standings.
The calmer, “Pin the Tail on the Bear,” was next. Each grade chose one student to be blindfolded and given a cotton tail. After being spun around ten times, the student had to rely on their classmates’ shouts and directions to find the bear and pin its tail. Whoever got closest to the correct spot earned the point.
As the gym filled with screams of frustration and excitement, the freshmen earned their second point of the week.
“Class Clash is so much fun, and I always love representing my grade every year,” sophomore Grace Badawi said.
The sophomores won Thursday’s spirit award, giving them another point, keeping them firmly in the lead with six points.
Friday: Four Seasons
Leadership ended the week with a season’s theme. Freshmen dressed as fall, sophomores as spring, juniors as winter, and seniors as summer.
The final day’s first game was “Head, Shoulders, Knees, and Cup.” The competition tested students’ reflexes as they followed Leadership’s commands and raced to grab a cup when instructed. The sophomores once again took the win.
Leadership also brought back some childhood games for the last day. “These games are a little out there and maybe things that you did as a kid, so it’s nice to bring back that inner childhood wonder into high school,” Basta said.
For the final team game of this semester’s Class Clash, students faced off in a competitive game of tug-of-war. Each grade worked together to pull their opponents across the line. The seniors ultimately took the win. But they weren’t finished. They also won the final most-spirited-grade contest, earning another point to close out the week.
After five days of games, costumes, and competition, the final scores were: Freshmen: 2, Sophomores: 7, Juniors: 4, Seniors: 5.
With the highest score, the sophomores won the first semester’s Class Clash.
