Girls Basketball Beats Lynbrook in Blowout Win

On Tuesday night, the M-A Girls’ Varsity Basketball team beat the Lynbrook Vikings by a score of 54-34 to improve their record to 5-2 this season.

The Bears had a slow start to the game, not finding any points until their third possession. Junior Fiona Steinmetz used her height and strength to get fouled in the paint, scoring M-A’s first points of the night from the free-throw line.

The Bears appeared to be in control of the game early, going up 5-2 just 2:30 into the first quarter. However, the Vikings’ full-court press proved to be strong, resulting in a four-point run that forced M-A to call their first timeout of the night with 4:50 left in the first quarter.

Senior Jamie Adams was dominant on defense all night, with an incredible block and a steal just in the first quarter.

Freshman Molly Gray also added to the scoresheet hitting a three-pointer on her first possession on the court, helping the Bears end the first quarter up 19-10.

The Bears were feeling it from deep in the second quarter. Adams scored a three early on that extended the M-A lead to double digits for the first time in the game. Shortly after, Gray hit another three. Steinmetz helped close out the half, sinking a 3 as the shot clock expired, making the Bears lead 32-18 at the half.

The Bears had a slow start to the second half, having great ball movement but struggled to find a shot that they liked. As the half progressed the Bears got back to the top of their game, going up 47-26.

As the fourth quarter rounded to an end, junior Taylor Spackman hit a buzzer-beater three and made the final score 54-34. This win helped the Bears achieve a 5-2 record for the season.

Junior Janiya Moss said, “The team worked really hard tonight and I’m glad we could get the win, I feel like this win is a real boost to our momentum, our team chemistry is really clicking heading towards league play.”

Steinmetz put up 19 points and three steals in the win. When asked about the team’s performance, she said, “I think the team did a great job tonight, and I can’t wait for the rest of the season!”
