Iconic Movie Reviews

Mean Girls (2004)

Mean Girls is a teen / comedy film about Kady Heron, a teenage girl beginning junior year in a new school after being homeschooled her entire life. This movie is well-known for a reason—its gossip and drama entertain everyone. That said, it also features the deeper story of a high school student just wanting to fit in and create friendships at a new school. I believe everyone should consider watching this film because of Kady’s relatability and the movie’s humor. Overall, this film is extremely amusing.

Clueless (1995)

Clueless is a teen film that follows the love story of Cher, a teenage girl, and Josh, her ex-brother-in-law, as well as Tai, a new girl at her school with whom she has an exciting new friendship. I enjoyed the film’s many real-life situations, including getting robbed, having a complicated love life, and living with strict parents. This film also highlights the late ‘90s style, with outfits like an iconic white body dress, a yellow plaid skirt suit, and an ivory cardigan set. I think both current teenagers and adults who were teens in the ‘90s would enjoy this film because of its time period.

Titanic (1997)

Titanic is a tragic romance film based on the real-life sinking of the Titanic on April 14-15th, 1912. The film focuses on a couple who meet on the ship, Rose and Jack, and their ensuing love story. This is one of the most incredible films I have ever seen, not only because it made me sob my eyes out, but also because of its humor, like when Jack tried to teach Rose how to spit off of the side of the ship. I love how the start immediately intrigues you and sets up the rest of the story as you watch people searching the ocean for a million-dollar necklace. This film brings you along on a crazy journey, and I would recommend watching it, whether individually, with friends, or with family.

Legally Blonde (2001)

Legally Blonde is a well-known romantic comedy about law student Elle Woods who only attends Harvard Law School to get her college boyfriend back. Other students only see her as a dumb blonde, but beyond watching her fall in love with another law student we also see her become a successful lawyer. I find this film hilarious, though Elle’s acceptance to Harvard Law is a little unrealistic. It is very entertaining to see how Elle does at Harvard and how she gets over her college boyfriend. I love this iconic film and believe it’s one of the best romantic comedies.

Matilda (1996)

Matilda is a fantasy film about a young girl, Matilda, who is extremely intelligent despite her family not believing in her. The story follows her journey in Crunchem Hall Elementary School, run by the tyrannical Agatha Trunchbull, where Matilda discovers and learns to deal with her powers. I love the way Matilda outsmarts everyone and becomes so strong, eventually changing her community for the better. I also enjoy the thrill of the film: you really don’t know what’s going to happen next, or how Matilda is going to deal with some situations at her new school. This film is very amusing, great for both children and adults, and great to watch with family.

10 Things I Hate About You (1999)

10 Things I Hate About You is a romantic comedy about two sisters, Kat and Bianca Stratford, who are complete opposites. Kat is very feminist, sarcastic, and confident; meanwhile, Bianca is sweet, charming, and bubbly. Their father decides that Bianca cannot get a boyfriend unless Kat does, and so the film follows high school students trying to get Kat a boyfriend so Bianca can get one. This film is very fun to watch with friends. Kat’s personality and how she begins to fall in love, as well as Bianca’s love story, are particularly interesting. I binge watch this movie every month or so, and it’s always satisfying to see both sisters’ development.

The Breakfast Club (1985)

The Breakfast Club is a comedy / teen film that focuses on five high school students who endure a Saturday detention. The five students don’t know each other that well but become much closer over the course of the day. I believe this story is very realistic in its portrayal of high school students judging each other mostly based on others’ reputations  without really knowing each other. It also has many chaotic moments that are very entertaining. I love watching this movie with my family, and I’m sure everyone can find it entertaining.

How to Lose A Guy in 10 Days (2003)

How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days is the ultimate romantic comedy. It’s centered on a romance between a writer, Andie Anderson, who writes for the “How to” columnist for Composure Magazine, and Benjamin Barry, the advertising executive. Andie is trying to find a guy to lose in 10 days for her “How to” column, while Benjamin is trying to win a big campaign and bets that he can make a woman fall in love with him in 10 days. They both use each other but end up falling in love. There are many moments that would make anyone laugh, and it’s very comforting to see them falling in love. Throughout the film, it’s also interesting to see their reactions to how the other uses them. This film is a great way to spend your time.
