Leadership Celebrates Custodial Staff with Food and Fun

Last Wednesday marked Custodial Appreciation Night, an annual celebration acknowledging the work that the M-A custodial team has done for our school.

Leadership hosted the event on the Green, complete with dinner and games like cornhole and volleyball. Junior Lucas Selvik, one of the committee chairs for the event, said, “Last year, we did the custodians’ work with them, which was really fun, but this year we took a different route. We wanted to give them a night where they could just relax and have fun.”

He continued, “The custodians are really important to us. Without them, campus wouldn’t be as nice as it is. We really wanted to show our appreciation for them.”

Custodian Juan Flores has worked at the school for nine years. He said, “The event was nice, a lot of fun. It was the first year that we did the games, and it was really enjoyable.”

Students were also quick to commend the custodial team. Junior Ella Thomson said, “I think custodial appreciation is really important because all the hard work they do for us often goes underappreciated.”

Junior Meghan Lam said, “People see their work, but they don’t really notice or recognize them like they should. M-A should be a place where we value everyone.”

On the 20th, teachers participated in a school-wide effort to make the custodians’ jobs easier. Every teacher cleaned their own room and left their garbage outside of their classrooms for faster access.

Nevertheless, custodians deserve to feel appreciated every day of the year, not just during special events. Students can make plenty of small changes to continue supporting custodians, like picking up after themselves and thanking them in the hallways.
