Swimming Dominates Sequoia on Senior Night

The swim team defeated the Sequoia Ravens by a joint score of 218-120 on Friday night for their senior night. 

Before the meet, the Bears celebrated their seniors during the last home meet of the season. Celebrations included posters, photo ops, team awards, and a celebratory senior relay to conclude the meet.

During the meet, the girls continued their undefeated streak, winning 111-58. The boys bounced back from their tough loss to Carlmont last week with a dominant 107 to 62 redemption victory. 

“I thought we did really well today as a team. Everyone brought their A-game for the final home meet of the season,” senior Quinne Davis said.

Early on in the meet, senior Natalie Scafetta and juniors Sarah Chang, Addison Finn, and Elise Miller blazed their way to victory and an impressive 1:57.94 time in the girls 200-yard medley relay. Sophomore Alex Sanchez-Jara, senior Abby Medin*, Freitas, and junior Siboney Lynch* followed for third place.

Building on the girls’ win, the boys delivered a solid performance too, claiming second and third to secure more spots on the podium.

The girls continued their streak with Scafetta to earn a CCS spot in the girls 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:59.84.

The boys claimed their first victory of the meet with senior Adrian Kunze Briseno’s performance in the 500-yard freestyle. He snagged a CCS qualification with a time of 4:46.30. 

The boys’ momentum continued, with sophomore Michael Powell dominating the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 54.17, only 0.45 seconds away from M-A’s school record. 

The meet was capped off by strong performances in the boys and girls 400-yard freestyle relay. Scafetta, Chang, junior Kat Savehenko, and sophomore Maya Earley took first place with a time of 3:59.87, while Medin, Frietas, Sanchez-Jara, and Lynch came in tight second with a time of 4:29.58. 

On the boys side, junior Jack Bullard, sophomore Alex Powell, Powell, and Kunze Briseno emerged victorious with a time of 3:25.30. They were followed by senior Armin Loftman, sophomore Chan Na, junior Isaac Chuang, and sophomore Joseph Tompkins for third.

After the meet, the girls and boys had a friendly competition, complete with pool floaties, backflips, and bellyflops, while the rest of the team cheered from the deck.  

“Today is definitely a day to reflect on, with all of the memories. It was definitely a highlight of the year,” senior Emily Freitas said. 

“My highlight was the senior relay at the end, I had a lot of fun with that,” Tide senior Justus Howell said.

“As seniors, with this being our last meet, we wanted to show the underclassmen what it means to be a swimmer for M-A and the culture we want them to carry on for the coming years,” senior Kunze Briseno said.

Team spirit was at an all-time high, as the Bears followed the win with the senior relay. “We have a lot of team spirit, everyone is always cheering for each other and supportive,” Davis said. 

The Bears will return to the pool against the Mills Vikings away on Tuesday at 4 p.m.
