Bear Bites: Milagros Latin Kitchen

Milagros Latin Kitchen, located in Downtown Redwood City, is a warm and welcoming restaurant with loud music, laughter, and, of course, delicious food. Sophomore Katherine Pavloff’s favorite taqueria is Milagros. She said, “I really like the environment at Milagros and everyone is super friendly!”

Milagros’ seating is first come first serve, and it does not take reservations. Luckily, my three friends and I were immediately able to get seats. They also opt for online ordering as opposed to servers and have a QR code at each table with a link to the menu and ordering site.

Guacamole

The service was swift: we got our food almost immediately after submitting our orders. We started the night with one order of their Traditional Guacamole ($11.95), a Strawberry Daiquiri ($6), a Frozen Lime Margarita ($6), and a Frozen Mango Margarita ($6), all non-alcoholic. The Traditional Guacamole (one of Milagros’ vegan dishes) is fresh and creamy and comes with a bucket of tortilla chips. You can order it mild, medium, or spicy. The Frozen Margaritas and the Daiquiri were a sweet and refreshing way to start the meal.

“I got the Frozen Lime Margarita, and it was super refreshing. I also really enjoyed the chips and guacamole,” sophomore Phoebe Matin commented.

For entrees, we ordered the Milagros Quesadilla with chicken ($12.95), the Quesabirria Trio ($15.95), one Mahi Mahi Taco ($5.95), one Roasted Carnitas Taco ($4.95), and one Chipotle Chicken Taco ($4.95). The Milagros Quesadilla and the Quesabirria Trio were the table favorites. The quesadilla came with sides of guacamole and sour cream, and was packed with flavorful spit-roasted chicken and a cotija, oaxaca, and manchego cheese blend. The Quesabirria Trio comes with three crispy tacos with juicy birria beef, caramelized onions and cheese served with a bowl of consommé, radish, and grilled jalapeno on a side. Both entrees came in large portions that are great to share with the table.

“I had the quesadilla and it was super good! I also had a quesabirria taco and it was cooked perfectly,” Matin said.

The Mahi Mahi Taco, the Roasted Carnitas Taco, and the Chipotle Chicken Taco (all gluten-free) are smaller portions and are great if you want to try multiple tacos. The Mahi Mahi Taco had perfectly pan-seared mahi mahi with a mild habanero-mango sauce and green salsa. The Roasted Carnitas Taco came with mouthwatering pulled pork carnitas and a rich chipotle aioli. The Chipotle Chicken Taco came with perfectly braised pulled chicken and queso fresco sprinkled on top.

“The meat in the carnitas was super flavorful and well cooked,” Pavloff added.

Lastly, for dessert, we ordered the Warm Chocolate Cake ($9) and the Churros ($8). The Warm Chocolate Cake had chocolate sauce and a dollop of whipped cream, and a rich chocolate flavor. The Churros had four pieces served with creamy chocolate and dulce de leche dipping sauces.

Matin’s favorite part of the meal was the dessert. She said, “The churros were warm and I really liked the chocolate sauce.”
